Murray Matt McMahon, the former head coach of the men’s basketball team at Murray State, and his family left Kyle-Oakley Field outside of Murray on a private plane Monday afternoon and flew to Baton Rouge, Louisiana. We’ve lived here for almost a decade, and we’ve met some amazing people who will be our friends for life, McMahon said just hours after being hired as the men’s basketball coach at LSU.
McMahon said that the time between what happened on Monday and his last game as head coach of the Racers, a 70-60 loss to Saint Peter’s in Indianapolis on Saturday, was short. Before he, his wife Mary, and their children Maris, Mabry, and Mason got on the plane, he said the purchase would be done in 24 hours.
McMahon is a famous coach for the Racer team
In seven years, he led Murray State to two wins in the NCAA Tournament and had a record of 154-67. In 2019, Memphis Grizzlies player Ja Morant led Murray State to an 83–64 win over Marquette. They beat San Francisco 92–87 in overtime on Thursday night.
In the last five years, the Racers have won the OVC regular-season title four times and the tournament title three times. Murray State won the OVC regular-season title for the 27th time by going 18-0 in conference play and not losing a single game.
He also said that being a coach at a top programme meant everything to him. “We’ve been lucky to be able to train great athletes in Murray and build strong relationships with players and coaches.”
McMahon’s last season (31-3) tied with 2011-12 and 2009-10 for the most wins in school history. In Murray, McMahon worked for Steve Prohm in 2011 and 2012. The AP ranked that team eighth and said they had won 23 games.
Kevin Saal, who is in charge of sports at Murray State, said Monday:
The Racer Family and Murray State University are thankful for Matt, Mary, and the rest of the McMahon family. Our men’s basketball team has benefited from Matt’s willingness to work hard, genuine care for people, and honest leadership for over a decade. Racer Nation has been energised by how hard Matt and his team work to do their best. The McMahons will always be a part of the Racer Family, and we hope they will succeed in the future.
Murray State University has a strong group of loyal fans. We want Murray State’s men’s basketball team to finish next season at or near the top of the Missouri Valley Conference. Racers!
McMahon goes back to Louisiana, where he was a coach for two weeks at the end of the 2014–15 season. When Prohm was hired as Iowa State’s coach, McMahon returned to Murray. He worked as a coach.
He wants the SEC Tigers to learn the same things
McMahon joins an unsettled LSU programme. The NCAA could punish it for rules that former coach Will Wade may have broken. Wade was fired after the Tigers lost the SEC Tournament in Tampa. During Wade’s office, the FBI looked into what people said he did.
