Whatever the case is, you need to know how to design an infographic. Well, we are happy to inform you that you’re in the right place! Let’s take a closer look.

What Exactly Is an Infographic?

Infographics are a digital graphic that shares information on a specific topic. Often times they’re used to share the base knowledge or certain statistics for whatever topic they’re on.

Infographics are always factual, meaning the content you incorporate should not be biased. This means that before you create one, you need to do your research and have sources.

If you’re at a loss for infographic ideas and aren’t sure where to start, sit down and brainstorm topics you are super passionate about. Try to choose something people may not know much about so you can effectively share this information to educate others. Once you’ve done that, you have to make it look good.

How to Design an Infographic

While there is a lot that goes into creating graphics, there are three big things that you need to know about. The first is color theory. Color is one of the first things that the viewer’s eyes will see so you want the infographic to look nice and you want it to be easy on the eyes.

A good starting point is to pick a set of complementary colors. If you aren’t sure what those are, simply find a picture of the color wheel and choose a color you want to work with. Whatever color is across from that is the complimentary i.e. red and green are complementary colors.

The two colors you’ve chosen should really be the base of your color scheme. You’re now free to pick other colors that work well with your main two, but be sure they aren’t too bright or dark. You also need to think about the following.

Contrast is crucial when planning your infographic because you need certain elements like text and smaller graphics to differ from the other elements. This will allow the viewer to easily differentiate all these parts, easing any strain on their eyes.

Be sure to play around with your colors until you find the good contrast that you want. If it’s difficult to read, don’t use those two together. And if it doesn’t look good, then change it up.

While definitely one of the more boring elements of graphic design, typography is equally one of the most important. You need to make sure that the font you use is both appropriate for the graphic and easy to read.

Typography is much more than just fonts though. Spacing and size is another important part of typography that can get a little confusing. To learn more about typography so you can make your infographic the best it can be, check out this article.

Visual hierarchy is our last essential for the article. When we look at something, we tend to notice certain things first. By manipulating the visual hierarchy in your infographic, you can tell the reader where to look first.

To influence the hierarchy, you can adjust size to show importance, use bolder colors to call the eye over, use contrast to make certain elements pop.
