Research

When exploring how to start a pool league, it’s important to understand the different organizations out there. Whether you’re looking to join one of these leagues or start your own is entirely up to you.

The different billiard leagues are:

  • USAPL (United States of America Pool League)
  • APA (American Poolplayers Association)
  • VNEA (Valley National 8-Ball League Association)
  • BCAPL (Billiard Congress of America Pool League)
  • TAP (Pool Amateur Tour)

If you decide to create a sanctioned league then that means you and your team can compete and play at different events or national tournaments. Call up different pool halls to decide where you want your league to be.

Find Players

Next, you’ll need to find players to join your league. You can start by placing posters and flyers to increase interest.

If you know anyone who plays pool, reach out to them and see if they know anyone else who wants to join. Also, reach out to local establishments with pool tables and see if they happen to know anyone who might want to join.

Equipment

Decide on the equipment you’ll allow the players to use. For example, wood racks, plastic racks, etc. Since these can have an impact on the game, it’s important to decide in advance what you’ll allow. Once you decide on the rules, ensure that the entire team understands and accepts.

League Dues

Also, decide how much each player will have to pay to be part of the league. League fees are a regular part of leagues and expected. If you decide to increase the cost, you can include snacks and drinks.

Deciding on the Format

You’ll need to decide on the format your billiards league will use. For example, whether you’ll be using a race or robin format.

In race formats, each person gets to play multiple games against another member from the opposite team. This means every person gets more time not playing compared to race formats.

The other format is round-robin. This is where every player will go against each player from the other team.

This means no one is standing or sitting for too long between the games. You can also use sports fixtures calculators here.
